Sailing Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera.

Beach Formentera

Sailing around the Balearic Islands.

After you have been visiting all the lovely bays, coves and beaches that Mallorca has to offer, you might consider another adventure. To start with there are a few more places and islands within close range of Mallorca that you can visit for a weekend trip or a weekly tour. Here are a few tips;

The Island of Menorca just northeast of Mallorca is a family friendly and beautiful Island to visit. It has a lovely coastline and the landscape is gorgeous. Nice beaches for the children with easy anchoring. The winds can be changing quickly but mainly in wintertime.

Ibiza is another popular destination and the island is slightly smaller than Majorca. It’s easy to understand why people want to discover the island’s diverse coastline by sailing boat. Here are caves, small picturesque bays, golden sandy beaches and crazy blue water. Cala Verdella is one of my favorites. The atmosphere is higher on the island’s south side, well known for its wild nightlife. On the north side it is the other way around very relaxed and bohemian. Very much like the neighboring island of Formentera just south of Ibiza.

Formentera is the second home of the rich and famous with a very relaxed and chic atmosphere. It is not exploited like Ibiza and Mallorca and therefore it has a very beautiful landscape and nature without and larger hotel complex and so on. It is easy to sail around Formentera but be aware of rocks and shallow water between Ibiza and the island. Do not forget to visit Cala Sahona for great snorkeling.

Whether you’re sending invitations to just a few, for an intimate ceremony, or many, for something more lavish, the ideal venue for ceremonies and receptions can be found here. Only residents can marry legally here, so formalities are usually completed first in the couple’s home country, with the dream wedding in Mallorca some time afterwards. Hiring one of Mallorca’s professional wedding planners will help your Big Day become everything you want it to be. Their expertise, ideas, and local knowledge are invaluable in finding the right venue, flowers, cake, photographers, music, wedding favours, cars and special requirements.

happy married1Before you get married in Mallorca the are hundreds of venues and excotic places to choose from. Mallorca has many pretty churches and chapels, but some of the most popular for weddings are those in Portals Nous, Calvià, Deià and Puerto Andratx. The chapels at Almudaina Palace and Bellver Castle, and Palma Old Town’s San Francisco basilica and 13th century cloisters, add historical atmosphere. Hotels include romantic Gran Hotel Son Net, Puigpunyent, rural Hilton Sa Torre, Castillo Hotel Son Vida, hire the huge terrace, for fabulous views. Villa Italia, Puerto Andratx, and in the Tramuntana, Cas Xorc. For beautiful sea views look at Hospes Maricel, Hotel Formentor with great beach photos. mallorca 15

The Super Yacht Show 2014

Organized by the Balearic Yacht Brokers Association this years Boat Show is expected to be a real success and bigger than in many years. Be sure to visit the Palma Super Yacht Show taking place between 30th of April and 4th of May and with opening times between 11:00 to 20:00 Hours. It is held in the Port of Palma home to the biggest and best infrastructure, industries and specialist technical service networks in the whole of the Mediterranean. The most dynamic and competitive nautical tourism destination in Europe. A strongly maritime atmosphere with a perfect combination of commercial demand for all of the types of companies in the marketplace with the opportunity to practice sailing and all types of water sports. Running concurrently with the 31st Boat Show Palma, in the heart of Palma, exhibitors and visitors benefit from the very real prospect that yachts can be sold and charters booked in comfortable atmosphere for the coming season. As the only public admission event organized by the industry itself, the Show remains unique and commencing this year, benefits from a recently signed partnership agreement with MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Agency.

News that super yacht Thalia, the splendid 48.42mts ketch, built by Vitters in 1994, now takes over the role as ‘largest yacht’ in the Show. They have 29 sailing yachts, which is probably more sailing yachts above 24mts than at any other public admission show in the world. An increased number of brokerage companies are also attending this year. They have 30 diverse companies exhibiting everything from yacht care and maintenance, onboard communications and medical services, through to yacht administration, yacht insurance and more. From an organizational point of view, take-up has exceeded all expectations, with berths for over half the expected number of 60+ yachts over 24m length taken, and 75% of shore-side exhibitor stand space already allocated. I will see you there!

SUP-Stand Up Paddle

images

The best water sport suitable for everyone!

Waters sports are so much fun. I learned to surf in Australia and Kite surf in Mallorca, and the kick you get out of it is just amazing. When we were out sailing on the east coast of Mallorca with Navegara crew they had some SUP-Stand Up Paddle boards on board. I mean if you are in to try new things then this is a lovely and enjoyable thing to do without any previous knowledge or experience. The lovely bays and coves were astonishing and explore them in your own pace standing on a board was just so relaxing and exiting. It can be very hard work as well. It is totally up to you how far you want to push yourself. It is great exercise but a lot easier than wave surfing. You can rent SUP boards almost everywhere on the beaches around Mallorca. For those who think it is to early to throw yourself into the cold water there are wetsuits to rent too? You will not regret trying Stand Up Paddle, it is simply awesome.

Day charter in Mallorca Part 2

rib

Day charter with RIB boat.

When we laying there at the beach or out swimming in the shallow water, we sometimes see that big noisy yacht that lies just near enough for us to be jealous. It is so close that you would like to swim out there and enter the boat and just lay yourself down at the sun bed and start relaxing. It is an awful feeling that it is not you there, at that handsome boat. Yes it is expensive to rent a large yacht in Mallorca but there are options for every wallet.

Charter a RIB boat is a great alternative if you want to throw yourself out there on the enormous Mediterranean Sea. It will go fast and it will be a more economical choice, plus you will have the freedom of going wherever you want on the water. To rent a RIB Boat you do not need the coolest skipper license but if you want you could rent a skipper for a day if you just want to enjoy and relax without any concerns. A RIB boat is an inflatable boat with a hard shaped hull which is perfect for speed and water toys. It also excellent to charter a RIB boat if you would like to visit a few beaches, caves or snorkeling spots, on just one day. How many times have you done more than 2 beaches in one day? The boat is also fantastic when it comes to go ashore because it can go wherever, as long it is water there, no matter how shallow it is. Imagine having a whole beach for yourself a couple of hours. Or why not have your lunch on that amazing rock which you cannot reach by foot. Rent a wake board for a fun water activity or bring a SUP board for extra training or pleasure.

The yacht charter company Navegara, are experts on RIB boat charter and they can recommend a lot of fun and beautiful spots for you to visit with your RIB boat. From Palma you can reach stunning beaches and bays in just 10 minutes. You can be as many as you want because they will provide you with as many boats that are necessary. So if you enjoy saltwater in your face and some high speed, then a RIB charter is a great alternative to a speedboat -or a motorboat charter. And do not forget the feeling that the poor bastard, laying on the beach, have. Not a feeling you would like on your next vacation in Mallorca.

Mallorca vines!

Jose L Ferrer

My favorite Mallorca red vine producer.

Besides going all crazy for yacht charter in Mallorca with Navegara yacht charter and their activities there are places on the Island that are definatly worth a visit. The vines in Mallorca are getting sharper for every year but I will reveal my favourite right now.

Bodegas José L. Ferrer, located in the beautiful village of Binissalem, of great wine tradition, is an inexcusable visit. They are a large wine grower with a great selection of wines, especially the red ones. You may enjoy its facilities, know the winemaking of its wines, venturing into the past at the museum, tasting and sharing their wines and gourmet products in the new shop open to the public. You can call the vineyard directly to arrange. Tours are open daily Monday to Friday at 11am and 4.30pm. There is a minimum of 5 people in a group and maximum 25 and it costs €6 per person. The shop is open Monday to Friday from 9.00 to 19.00 and Saturday from 10.00 to 14.00.

The 120 hectares of vineyard within municipalities belonging to the D.O. Binissalem-Mallorca (Binissalem, Consell, Santa Eugenia, Santa Maria del Cami and Sencelles). In these vineyards there are mainly grown native varieties of the region, which are the red grapes Mantonegro and Callet, and the white Moll or Prensal blanc. Besides these, there are other varieties grown and more well known such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Tempranillo, Merlot, Moscatel and Chardonnay.

This area of land has optimal conditions for growing grapes. With a terrain brown-limestone type (Call vermell), an altitude of 80-200 meters, ideal weather (average annual rainfall of 450 mm and protection of the “Serra de Tramuntana”) giving the wines an exclusive personality that recalls Mediterranean atmosphere. This place is definitely worth a visit.

Port de Sóller

Bavaria Cruiser 50

Sailing charter

Sóller and the port of Port de Sóller is about a half hour enchanting drive from Palma Airport. The beautiful landscape that stretching out before you get here is an experience itself. The small harbor is the only one on the rugged but beautiful northwest coast. The daily sailing charter starting and boarding in Port de Sóller will be an unforgettable experience for those who loves a varied coastline with cliffs, caves and coves hiding in rock formations. The crystal clear water has a great temperature and the coast surrounded by the magnificent mountain range is highly appreciated by divers and for those who prefer snorkeling and hidden coves.
The area is a favorite destination for people from all over the world. Especially those who enjoy walking, nature, ecotourism, swimming or simply a quiet moment away from the hustle and bustle that occurs on more well known tourist traps.
There are several secluded coves within easy reach of Port de Sóller. To begin with, you can drop anchor in Deia and go ashore for lunch at the excellent restaurant C’as Patro. Or why not pre-book a paella on the secluded restaurant Sa Foradada as it is only accessible by boat or a hefty hike down the mountain slope. Cala Tuent is very beautiful  and I know that Navegara can arrange hiking tours from Port de Sóller to Cala Tuent and then having a barbacue together before taking the sailingboat back for a much needed rest. A place I recommend to visit. The well known island Dragonara at the southwest corner of Mallorca is a World Heritage. Here they sail often for the wonderful caves with crystal clear water and the little restaurant that makes food over an open fire. Fish or Paella is usually on the menu. Port de Sóller is a place were everyone can find something amazing to do!

My favorite port

top floor

Port Adriano

The port of the ports. I have just found my new favorite place to hang out this summer. Port Adriano is just simply beautiful, quiet and full of luxury super yachts. Now in springtime the atmosphere here is very Australian, very relaxed, quiet and with a lovely beach just next to it. There are mainly boat people sitting in the sun with a beer and a pair of sunglasses when taking a break of the boat maintenance that needs to be done before the tourist invasion.

When taking a walk out on the newly build port the boats are just getting bigger and bigger. All the way out on walk there are a few restaurants, charter brokers and luxury shops in the modern building. On the second floor you can enjoy boats entering and leaving the port and you will have a nice view all over the spot. The yachts that lay just under your feet are breathtaking and you just want to sneak in every single one of them to have a look on the inside of those magnificent, unique and expensive boats. They say there are a lot of water sports going on here in the summertime but right now the place is quiet. I hope that this place are just as beautiful in the summer as it is right now because I will definitely come back.
